What The Butler Saw

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

By Joe Orton

Within the pristine walls of his private psychiatric clinic, Doctor Prentice is interviewing a new secretary. Geraldine wants the position but seems underqualified and uncertain about her parentage. Mrs Prentice appears, flushed and in urgent need of a drink, following an illicit encounter with Nick Beckett, blackmailer and bell boy at the Station Hotel. In the meantime, Doctor Rance, a Government Inspector and Sergeant Match, a policeman, arrive amidst increasing chaos with searching questions of their own.

'What The Butler Saw' is Joe Orton’s final, most ambitious play, manic farce and masterclass in fearless comic writing. No institution, political view or tradition is safe, as Orton focuses his wicked sense of humour on a range of targets, including the establishment, an ex-Prime Minister, cross-dressing, misogyny and the medical profession. He brings together an array of distinctive characters, placing them in a series of improbable situations, unflinchingly exploring comic territory few playwrights before or since have dared to visit.

John Kingsley (Joe) Orton, playwright, author and diarist was born in Leicester in 1933. During a short, but dazzling career in the London theatre world, he shocked, outraged, and delighted audiences with his riotous black comedies, including Loot, The Erpingham Camp, The Ruffian on the Stair and Entertaining Mr Sloane. Joe Orton was battered to death by his lover, Kenneth Halliwell, in 1967.

Contains strong language and subject matter which the playwright very much hoped audiences would find offensive.

Presented by London Classic Theatre Ltd, who brought the smash hit Abigail’s Party to the stage at the New Wolsey Theatre in October 2023.

Age Guidance: 14+. Contains strong language, adult theses, mild nudity, and discussions of sexual assault.

Production photography: Sheila Burnett

Sweet Charity

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

IODS Theatre Company return to the New Wolsey again this year following last summer’s triumphant run of NODA award winning ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, this time with the smash hit musical ‘Sweet Charity’. Hapless but unflappable, Charity Hope Valentine desperately seeks love in New York City in the 1960s. In this exuberant, groovy, hilarious musical comedy, Charity tries again and again to find her dream and make something of herself.

With a fantastic score by Cy Coleman, sparkling lyrics by Dorothy Fields, hilarious book by Neil Simon and famously originally choreographed by Bob Fosse, Sweet Charity captures all the energy, humour, and heartbreak of Life in the Big City for an unfortunate but irrepressible optimist. Musical numbers include: “Big Spender,” “If My Friends Could See Me Now,” “I’m a Brass Band” and “The Rhythm of Life”.

A few more details ...

Welcome to Serene - Presented by British Youth Music Theatre

A small coastal town facing extinction. A big machine. Welcome to Serene!

This brand new musical takes you into the weird world of a small town called Serene, along with its zany inhabitants. With daily avalanches of sand burying everything at ground level, the residents rely on ‘The Machine’ - the town’s answer to the threat of extinction, by sucking in sand from the beach and spitting it back into the ocean.

The Highwayman

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

The Highwayman

Sexy, darkly funny and deeply moving

Welcome, lovelies, to our tub-thumping pub singalong, set in the year 1666 but reflecting exactly who we are right here, right now in 2024.

Inspired by Alfred Noyes’ classic poem, The Highwayman tells the story of a doomed love affair between Bess and self-confessed sociopath Duval. Along the way we meet a cast of richly drawn restoration rogues and romantics – including a mysterious conquistador, a sadistic smuggler and a rip-roaring East End landlady. Not to mention special guest appearances by Nell Gwynn and King Charles II himself.

The Highwayman is about longing for better while trying to run from the worst of our past. It explores love, loss and the light in the dark. And it asks why we always seem to find the perfect knife on which to cut ourselves.

The Highwayman submerges the audience in a unique, genre busting sound world in which a live band joyously reimagines pub singalongs and folk ballads in super contemporary arrangements, influenced by electro swing, Adele, Billie Eilish and Kae Tempest. Book your ticket to the ride of your life.

Presented by OVO and Norwich Theatre
Music, book and lyrics by Kitty Morgan | Arrangements by Adam Morris.

Directed by Adam Nichols.

Ultimate Asian Wedding DJ Roadshow

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

Pali & Jay’s Ultimate Asian Wedding DJ Roadshow

An immersive CJ bromance

Whoever said there are too many actors in LA, has never seen the number of DJs in Southall. Nowadays, anyone with a laptop and a pair of headphones can post a video of themselves online mixing a few tracks and claim to be from the same pind (village) as Diljit Dosanjh.

The lead DJ of our duo, Pali, is an old school lover of the craft and has his heart set on moulding his nephew, Jay, into becoming the heir to his DJ’ing empire (that he is building one dance floor tile at a time). Jay, however, is only bothered about taking advantage of the free food at gigs and spotting ‘fitties’ in the crowd. He’s ready to call time on his latest side hustle in order to fulfil what he believes is his destiny of becoming a stand up comic.

With competition for gigs hotting up and cases of DJ’ing sabotage amongst their rivals increasing, everyone is on edge. Using only their simple DJ set up and the odd cup of chai, this show will transport you through time, from Southalls biggest deck off 1999 to now.

Our Uncle and nephew DJ’ing duo must successfully navigate their latest gig in order to save the company, their future aspirations and ultimately, their bromance.

For Ages 16+

Presented by Rifco Theatre Company

Please Note: The on stage seating will be arranged around individual tables. Don't worry about making sure the seats you are booking are next to each other as your group will be allocated seating around individual tables dependant on group size.

Footloose

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

Everybody cut loose! We are celebrating 40 years of Footloose with our exciting new stage production!

“A time to laugh... and a time to weep. A time to mourn... and there is a time to dance”

The New Wolsey Theatre is heading back to the 1980s this Autumn to stage a spectacular new production of the explosive musical Footloose.

When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, he is prepared for the inevitable adjustment to starting at a new high school, but he’s not prepared for the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing.

This heartfelt story pits a father longing for the son he lost against a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. To the rockin’ rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated Top Forty score, elevated with dynamic new songs, Footloose celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people while guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind.

Based on the hit 1980s film, which this year celebrates its 40th anniversary, and directed by the New Wolsey Theatre’s Chief Executive/Artistic Director Douglas Rintoul (Made in Dagenham (Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch and New Wolsey Theatre), Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole The Musical (Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch), Footloose will première at Pitlochry Festival Theatre from 31 May until 26 September and then transfer to the New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich from 3-26 October.

Footloose first burst into life in the 1984 film starring Kevin Bacon and was one of that year's most successful motion pictures. The film’s soundtrack reached Number 1 on the Billboard charts and went on to sell over 17 million copies worldwide, generating hits including its title song and Let’s Hear It for the Boy (both of which received Academy Award nominations), plus Almost Paradise, Holding Out for A Hero by Bonnie Tyler, and I’m Free (Heaven Helps the Man).

Touch Tour (Sleeping Beauty)

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

Booking an Audio Described performance? Add a Pre-show Touch Tour!

The Touch Tours for Dick Whittington and his Cat start one hour before the performance.

Please meet at the Box Office. Please only book in as many places as are needed as numbers are limited for these events.

For many blind, partially sighted or visually impaired theatregoers, a touch tour is an essential part of the theatre experience. Having access to the stage and set before a performance is a way of firming up the descriptive information they may have already received and provides them with extra detail to allow them to engage with the production. Customers will explore the space, and may like to handle selected props, costumes and furniture.

A touch tour ticket is not a ticket to the performance, these are booked separately through the Dick Whittington event page linked below.
