Wolsey Writers - Spring 18

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

Wolsey Writers – Spring 2018

‘You can make anything by writing.’

Have you got a story to tell? A touch of the poet? Are plays your scene? Or do you struggle to find your voice? Wolsey Writers is a creative writing group which meets backstage at New Wolsey Theatre. It offers space to let your imagination work, tips on how to improve, and encouragement to help you achieve your goals. Whether you’re new to creative writing or looking to stretch yourself, this workshop will support and inspire you.

‘It was brilliant – I can’t remember a better writing class.’
‘Humble, informative and inspirational – that is surely the success and key to Wolsey Writers.’
‘Coming at a time when I’m trying to write my first novel, these sessions have been invaluable.’

Wolsey Writers is facilitated by award-winning author, Katie Ward. Her debut novel, Girl Reading, was critically acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic. @katiewardwriter, #WolseyWriters, or facebook/katiewardwriter.

10 March – What’s Your Poison?
Bond was fussy about martinis; Gatsby liked to stay sober; and Alice obeyed a label that said DRINK ME. Inspired by your favourite tipple, we will focus on descriptions.

17 March – Political Speeches
‘I have a dream…’ ‘We shall fight on the beaches…’ ‘The lady’s not for turning…’ How do you write a speech that can change the world?

24 March – Dialogue
Dialogue is everywhere in fiction, yet it is notoriously difficult to write well. We consider what great dialogue sounds like and how it works.

7 April – Time Travel
Have you been a victim of the butterfly effect? Do you know your TARDIS from your DeLorean? We explore the quirks, tropes, and paradoxes of time travel.

14 April – Ekphrasis
Ekphrasis is when one work of art is inspired by another in a different form. This week we experiment with creative writing from music.

21 April – Prison Letters
We explore epistolary novels and letter writing as a storytelling device.

Saturdays, 10am – 12 noon. Meet at Ticket Desk.
£14.50 per workshop, or book all six in advance for £75.
Tea & coffee provided.

Suitable for writers aged 18+.
There is no workshop on Easter bank holiday weekend.

Presented by Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch and Les Theatres de la Ville de Luxembourg in association with Selladoor Productions

By Diane Samuels
Directed by Anne Simon
Designed by Marie-Luce Theis

A deeply moving and timely modern classic about a woman’s struggle to come to terms with her past.

Hamburg 1938: nine year-old Eva is forced onto a train by her desperate mother in order to escape the threat of World War II. Arriving at Liverpool Street Station, tagged like a piece of luggage, she’s handed over to strangers.

Manchester 1980: Evelyn, a proud mum, prepares to say goodbye to daughter Faith as she leaves the family home. But what Faith finds in the attic will change her life forever…

This heart-warming production is from the producers of last year’s acclaimed revival of ‘The Crucible’. It marks the 80th anniversary of the Kindertransport, which saw thousands of Jewish children ferried from Austria and Germany to safety.

Diane Samuels wrote this extraordinary and haunting play 25 years ago. It has never been more relevant than today.

A few more details ...

A New Wolsey Theatre Production

The 6th of May 2018 will mark 40 years since Ipswich Town’s Historic FA Cup victory - a moment when Ipswich united to celebrate success as the underdog became victorious. Join us to celebrate with a milestone musical production!

Created from the heart-warming memories of super blues fans themselves, with a live soundtrack of chart hits from '78, join Bobby and his Blue Army on this nostalgic trip down Wembley Way.

This production has been created thanks to support from: East Anglian Daily Times and Ipswich Star, who inspired the title Our Blue Heaven from their newspaper front cover on Monday 8 May 1978; BBC Radio Suffolk; Ipswich Town Supporter’s Club; Ipswich Town Football Club; DanceEast, and to the kind donations gathered from our Indiegogo campaign in Autumn 2017.

#PULSE18 - One Item Only

New Wolsey Studio, St Georges Street, Ipswich, IP1 3NF

A few more details ...

An incredible journey away from home.

Margarita Sidirokastriti and the egg present
One Item Only
Directed by Craig Edwards
Designed by Edwina Bridgeman
Sound Design by Sam Halmarack

If you had to take a long journey away from home and you could only take one item with you - what would it be? This is the decision our young hero has to make.

One Item Only chronicles the adventures of a young person who goes on an incredible journey away from home. Armed with only a backpack of favourite items, the child’s most treasured possessions help in some surprising and creative ways, to overcome many barriers along the way.

The story intriguingly and inventively is told via the use of minimal storytelling, a pen, a pad of paper and a global soundtrack, mapping the journey, evoking different landscapes and endowing its audience with a profound sense of what it is to be human and to have a place to call ‘home.’

#PULSE18 - Skin A Cat by Isley Lynn

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

A wickedly funny, no-holds barred take on a teenage girl’s sexual awakening and misadventures.

Every teenager thinks they’re the only one not having sex. But for Alana, it may well be true. Every time she gets close to doing it something just seems to get in the way… Soon she can’t help wondering is it this tricky for everyone else? Because no one ever said it was going to be this complicated

With a kaleidoscope of off kilter characters, Skin A Cat follows Alana on an awkward sexual odyssey: from getting her first period at nine years old and freaking out her frantic mother, to watching bad porn at a house party, to a painful examination by an overly cheery gynaecologist – all in the pursuit of losing her virginity and finally becoming a woman. Whatever that means…

Winner of the VAULT Festival’s Pick of the Year Award and nominated for four Off-West End Awards including Best New Play, Skin A Cat is an alternative coming of age story about going all the way.

Frequently hilarious, it’s also refreshingly honest and open... there’s something so rousing and refreshing about the whole production; this is bold and genuinely exciting new writing - Natasha Tripney ★★★★

[SAC] avoids becoming an issue piece, becoming an altogether more interesting mediation on difference and the crushing pressure to be what is considered normal in a highly sexualised culture. Lyn Gardner, The Guardian.

Skin A Cat should be compulsory viewing for under 25s. Scratch that. It should be compulsory viewing for everyone. - Fergus Morgan, Theatre Critic

"If it’s likely something you want to do is going to go very VERY badly... then it’s probably not worth doing, right?"
Definitely categorically 100% based on true events; through music, absurd soulful metaphors and chain smoking puppets, Eden tells the emotional and tragic tale of an exponentially unfortunate fox…
Don’t be fooled by the cuddly toys. If you thought this was going to be a children’s show… You thought wrong.

#PULSE18 - Moonfall

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

A magical, playful and charmingly entertaining circus theatre show

Join a princess like no other as she embarks on the biggest journey of her life – to the Moon! This brilliantly comical story-telling performance looks at the relationship of a brother and sister whilst exploring the role of gender stereotypes within children’s theatre, using a rope, a hoop and bags of imagination.

Moonfall is a 45-minute two-hander which uses aerial circus, physical comedy and magical story telling, to bring to life the story of a princess, a prince and the moon, perfect for small to mid-scale venues.

"The actors are obviously comfortable playmates and the chemistry and relationship between the two of them draws one in to their fantasy world… genuine laugh out loud moments for the entire family." Broadway Baby

The narrative of the piece is light hearted and playful, following the story of a not-so-typical princess and her relationship with her brother. Being fed up with the way the world is around her, she decides to run away to the moon! This piece highlights sibling relationships, friendship and challenges the role and presentation of both the female and male characters in a humorous and beautiful way.

Moonfall has been created by Hikapee, with support from Arts Council England, Theatre Delicatessen, Jacksons Lane, SeaChange Arts and Circus Futures.

Moonfall is a completely non-verbal production, with the narrative told through physical performance and an original soundtrack.
"The circus routines are full of charm and wit and bounce easily and confidently between knockabout fun and serene beauty." Broadway Baby

#PULSE18 - I Wish I Was A Mountain

New Wolsey Studio, St Georges Street, Ipswich, IP1 3NF

A few more details ...

A bold re-imagining of Herman Hesse’s classic fairytale

the egg and Toby Thompson present
I Wish I Was A Mountain
By Toby Thompson, Directed by: Lee Lyford
Designed by: Anisha Fields

"...a wonderful gift for language, a deep sensibility and a penetrating sense of perspective."
Sir Ken Robinson.

On the day of the famous annual fair, the town of Faldum receives an unexpected visit. A wanderer offers to grant a wish to anyone who wants one. Before long, the city is transformed. Mansions stand where mud huts once squatted, and beggars ride around in horse drawn carriages. And one man wishes to be turned into a mountain.

Written and performed by former Glastonbury Poetry Slam Champion Toby Thompson, I Wish I was a Mountain uses rhyme, live music, and just a smattering of metaphysical philosophy to boldly reimagine Herman Hesse’s classic fairytale. Do we really need the things that we need? What do mountains feel? How did time begin? Adults are kindly requested to leave all answers to these questions at the door. Children, come as you are.

Suitable for ages 7+

#PULSE18 - Our Carnal Hearts

HEG High Street Exhibition Gallery, High Street, Ipswich, IP1 3QH

A few more details ...

A raucous celebration of desire and competition.

This fairy comes round your house.
You, she says, are in luck.
Ask for anything you want. Anything in the world and I’ll give it to you. But whatever you ask for, your neighbour gets the same thing, but double.
Great. You say. Fine.
Cut out one of my eyes.

With a raucous chorus of original music, Rachel Mars and four belting female singers come at you with hilarious dark show about the hidden workings of one of our uglier emotions. Our Carnal Hearts is a gleeful, thrilling and murky celebration of envy, competitive spirits and all the times we f*ck each other over. Like a combination of performance, comedy, a singing lesson and a conjuring ritual, the show feels like five women have rocked up at your town and are inviting you to a beautiful, raucous theatrical ceremony.

Our Carnal Hearts is a celebration of envy, a joyous call for everyone we’ve ever wanted to be and everything we’ve ever wanted to own. A place to whoop at our own fragility and delight against our better nature. A toast to our competitive spirits and a rumbling dance for the ugly gutter-tramping parts of our souls. A show that seeks to prove that envy makes us better. That politicians are right: that its spirit runs through our hearts, lymph systems and bowels and it’s glorious and we wouldn't want it any other way.

"Wickedly funny... soothing and sharp-edged at the same time." **** The Stage
"not just honest... very funny, too, and streaked with regret" **** Lyn Gardner, The Guardian
"deeply engaging... beautifully blends together mundane normality and phantasmal spectacle." ***** Broadway Baby

Following critical acclaim for The Wipers Times, Ian Hislop and Nick Newman have once again taken inspiration from real life events for their new play Trial by Laughter.

William Hone, the forgotten hero of free speech, was a bookseller, publisher and satirist. In 1817, he stood trial for ‘impious blasphemy and seditious libel’. The only crime he had committed was to be funny. Worse than that he was funny by parodying religious texts. And worst of all, he was funny about the despotic government and the libidinous monarchy.

Cinderella

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

This year, the New Wolsey Theatre goes back to where it all began, Cinderella – the Rock’n’Roll panto!

Sponsored by Ipswich Building Society

It’s time to SHAKE A TAIL FEATHER and head DOWNTOWN to Ipswich Town Hall to meet the Mayor, Baron Hardup! It’s not easy being Mayor, with Prince Charming due in town for a Royal visit and a staff of only two – his beautiful, feisty daughter, Cinderella and the loyal and loveable Buttons. But when his lonely hearts ad is answered by the mysterious Rubella De Zees, who brings along her two dangerous daughters Hernia and Verruca, it seems he’s far more than THREE STEPS TO HEAVEN. Thankfully, there’s a Fairy Godmother to make sure Cinderella is ready to ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK!

Written by Peter Rowe, the classic rock’n’roll panto, with a hint of soul, is back with another multi-talented cast of actor-musicians. Rock, pop and soul classics include IT’S RAINING MEN, IN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR, TRY A LITTLE TENDERNESS, and more!

WE’RE GONNA’ MAKE YOU WANNA’ SHOUT!

A Jazz Odyssey for Ages 3+
“Reindeer… you got groove”

’The Ballad of Rudy’ is an original children’s Christmas theatre show. In this story Rudy doesn’t have a red nose; rather it’s his talent for new and exciting music that sets him apart from all the other Reindeers. Together with a magical Jazz Penguin he goes on an adventure that teaches him that life isn’t about following the herd. Funny, warm and with a massive heart, this show features live music, original songs and lots of imagination, guaranteed to have children aged 3 and up mesmerised from start to finish.

Sing the blues with a Polar Bear, jam with the Puffins and beat-box with an Arctic Fox. It all happens at the North Pole Jazz Lounge; the coolest place on earth.

Using real, top quality musicians and a live jazz score alongside a new take on a traditional tale, we want to introduce this creative mix to young audiences, and on a grander scale, to show children that being creative and different is something to celebrate.

Please note, the one and only late night special is Friday 21st December at 9pm.

Please note, the one and only late night special is Friday 21st December at 9pm.
