Touch Tour (Dick Whittington and his Cat)

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

Booking an Audio Described performance? Add a Pre-show Touch Tour!

The Touch Tours for Dick Whittington and his Cat start one hour before the performance.

Please meet at the Box Office. Please only book in as many places as are needed as numbers are limited for these events.

For many blind, partially sighted or visually impaired theatregoers, a touch tour is an essential part of the theatre experience. Having access to the stage and set before a performance is a way of firming up the descriptive information they may have already received and provides them with extra detail to allow them to engage with the production. Customers will explore the space, and may like to handle selected props, costumes and furniture.

A touch tour ticket is not a ticket to the performance, these are booked separately through the Dick Whittington event page linked below.

Romeo & Juliet

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

Romeo & Juliet
adapted from Shakespeare

Your family teaches you to hate
You fall for a forbidden foe
You act without thinking and risk everything to be together

A hostile and dangerous city. Two families wage a bitter war. Death threats are shouted brazenly in the streets. Will a young innocent couple become a sacrifice of this hateful feud?

This pacy and inventive 80-minute adaptation of Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy is specially created for students and teachers of English and Drama - and anyone new to the play.

Following on from last year’s successful and critically acclaimed production of DNA, The New Wolsey Theatre proudly brings together the very best of East Anglia’s emerging talent to devise a contemporary and playful ‘Romeo & Juliet’ for audiences of today.

“If you haven’t seen this classic play, then it’s a good opportunity to experience a pretty slick version and to see some of the best emerging talent in the region at the same time.” British Theatre Guide review for DNA, 2023

Romeo & Juliet Masterclasses
Presented by the New Wolsey Theatre

Join the New Wolsey Theatre’s Artistic Director Douglas Rintoul and the cast, as he unpacks the creative journey that took Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’ from the page to the stage; exploring key moments in the play and revealing how choices were made in relation to the characters, themes, and the language of the text. Suitable for secondary school students about to study, or are already studying, GCSE Drama and English Literature.

Teacher feedback from Secondary Schools for ‘DNA’ Masterclasses and production Feb 2023:

“Really informative and positive. Our students really enjoyed the Q&A and they gained a real insight into the production. It was great to have many voices from various aspects of the production …. We've never been to the New Wolsey Theatre before, but we would certainly return. Loved it.

“Just want to say thank you! I've been to many student theatre events and yours was up there with the best of them. You made the students feel involved and valued. Can't ask for more than that.”

“The participatory elements were the key strength. The focus on the way in which directorial and design choices had been made was really valuable.”

“I felt this was great value for money and a very useful experience for our students.”

Vamos Theatre, in a co-commission with London International Mime Festival and a co-production with New Wolsey Theatre, presents

Boy on the Roof

Acceptance, understanding and love find their way to centre stage.

Created through Community Conversations across the UK, gathering people’s experiences of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity (ADHD), loneliness, aging, hearing loss, connection and community, Vamos Theatre’s Boy on the Roof is the story of an unlikely friendship, where acceptance, understanding and love find their way to centre stage.

At no.73 Cooper St, Brian Baxter wishes his son wasn’t so irritating. Liam Baxter can’t switch off, can’t sit still, he’s disruptive at school and chaotic at home. As for Liam, he just wishes someone understood him.

Three doors down, Albert keeps himself to himself, sticks to his routines. At 91, he knows what he likes and likes what he knows. But Albert misses his wife and just wishes that someone, somewhere would have time for him.

When Liam and Albert’s paths cross, no one can fathom what an earth they have in common. But the boy and the man share more than they know, and what slowly grows is a friendship that both of them need, even if the rest of the world can’t see it.

As with all its productions, Vamos Theatre welcomes everyone to see Boy on the Roof, including people who may need a more accepting auditorium environment. The company invites all its audiences to join in supporting this inclusivity, so that everyone feels welcome.

Suitable for 12+, this production contains references to drugs.

Sinatra: RAW

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

“Shelton Sizzles As Sinatra… His mannerisms, his repartee with the audience, his velvety voice, are all incredible.” Hollywood Fringe 2023 - Bonnie Priever, Curtain Up

“… an astonishing performance of one of the greatest icons of our age… Richard Shelton’s performance is mesmerizing, emotional, tender and utterly real... if you love Sinatra and honestly, who doesn’t, this is unmissable.” Hollywood Fringe 2023 - Samantha Simmonds-Ronceros, NoHo Arts

The critically acclaimed, multi-award-winning show ‘Sinatra: RAW’ stars actor and singer Richard Shelton, accompanied on piano. Wolverhampton-born, and fondly remembered from TV’s ‘Emmerdale’, Shelton is internationally acclaimed as one of the world’s best interpreters of Frank Sinatra’s music. ‘Sinatra: RAW’ brings to life the man who defined an era, and whose musical legacy will never die.

Palm Springs, 1971 - Frank Sinatra prepares for his last pre-retirement intimate show. But his blue eyes are red rimmed with memories and regret. He drinks ‘One For My Baby’ too many when things take an unexpected twist. This is the 2am Sinatra you dream of meeting - dangerous, unpredictable, brilliant!

Regrets? He’s had a few. Sinatra gathers a few friends together in the Purple Room, Palm Springs to sing a few songs around the piano, smoke a few cigarettes and reminisce. As the Jack Daniels goes down, the memories surface. He rails against the iniquities of Mafia allegations, a trail of broken love affairs, a life as the leader of the Rat Pack and a life in Hollywood littered with indiscretions and even a suicide attempt.

At the heart of it is the great love of his life, Ava Gardner – arguably the most beautiful actress in Hollywood and known as ‘The Body’. She’s no pushover and meets him drink for drink and punch for punch as he recalls the heartbreak of their doomed love affair and marriage.

Despite it all, Sinatra emerges triumphant in a belting rendition of ‘That’s Life!’, summing up the substance of the man, and we see what made him such an enduring icon.

What The Butler Saw

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

What The Butler Saw
By Joe Orton

No institution, political view or tradition is safe in this masterclass of a comedy!
Within the pristine walls of his private psychiatric clinic, Doctor Prentice is interviewing a new secretary. Geraldine wants the position but seems underqualified and uncertain about her parentage. Mrs Prentice appears, flushed and in urgent need of a drink, following an illicit encounter with Nick Beckett, blackmailer and bell boy at the Station Hotel. In the meantime, Doctor Rance, a Government Inspector and Sergeant Match, a policeman, arrive amidst increasing chaos with searching questions of their own.

WHAT THE BUTLER SAW is Joe Orton’s final, most ambitious play, manic farce and masterclass in fearless comic writing. No institution, political view or tradition is safe, as Orton focuses his wicked sense of humour on a range of targets, including the establishment, an ex-Prime Minister, cross-dressing, misogyny and the medical profession. He brings together an array of distinctive characters, placing them in a series of improbable situations, unflinchingly exploring comic territory few playwrights before or since have dared to visit.

John Kingsley (Joe) Orton, playwright, author and diarist was born in Leicester in 1933. During a short, but dazzling career in the London theatre world, he shocked, outraged, and delighted audiences with his riotous black comedies, including Loot, The Erpingham Camp, The Ruffian on the Stair and Entertaining Mr Sloane. Joe Orton was battered to death by his lover, Kenneth Halliwell, in 1967.

Contains strong language and subject matter which the playwright very much hoped audiences would find offensive.

Presented by London Classic Theatre Ltd, who brought the smash hit Abigail’s Party to the stage at the New Wolsey Theatre in October 2023.
