New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

Last year the rock ‘n’ roll panto was (Snow) Queen size. This year it’s GIANT size!

The famous New Wolsey rock ‘n’ roll panto is back better than ever before with live-streaming as an option. Peter Rowe’s ingenious script will once again include interactions with audiences at home, participation and shout-outs, and the chance to supply a prop during the show!

Join Jack’s adventure as we find that Dame Dolly Durden’s family farm has fallen on hard times - Squire Snuffbox is demanding the rent and Giant Blunderbore, with his wicked sidekick, Fleshcreep, is terrorising the land. There’s only one thing for it – Jack will have to sell their last remaining cow, Bessie. Then up pops Fairy Aubergine, up jumps a gigantic beanstalk and Jack is soon on his way up too, battling giants, rescuing the family farm and romancing the Squire’s spirited daughter, Jill.

Brought to you by the famous New Wolsey company of multi-skilled actor musicians, it’s the best of pantomime mixed with the best songs from the classic rock and pop playlist, all played live before your eyes, including Hit The Road Jack, Lady Marmalade, Get Offa My Cloud, Go Your Own Way and many, many more.

But when Jack comes back from the market with nothing more than a bag of beans it looks like the Durdens are done for.

This glorious mash up of pantomime and pop concert is a festive treat for all the family.

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

Produced by 509 Arts with Hull Truck Theatre, supported by Mind the Gap, Funded by Arts Council England

MEAL ONE

Helbert and his mother like doing a lot of things together but their experiment with a plum stone gets out of hand!

A boy is asleep in his bed. Suddenly he sits up in surprise and shouts:
“Who put a plum in my mouth?”
“Me, me, me!” shouts Mum.
And that is how it begins.

Meal One is an immersive and playful family show featuring Helbert, his Mum, a dog and a cat. One day they plant a plum stone in the bedroom floor. By morning, a huge tree has grown and turned the bedroom into the best tree-house-playground ever. But when they go downstairs for Meal One, the kitchen is full of tree roots busily munching through anything they can find!

Based on a 1970s children’s book by Ivor Cutler and Helen Oxenbury, Meal One is a journey of discovery filled with breath-taking projections, music and singing, dance and fun.

The Ballad of Maria Marten

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

THE BALLAD OF MARIA MARTEN
By Beth Flintoff
Age guidance 12+

A thrilling retelling of Suffolk’s real-life murder mystery…

Summer 1827. In a red barn Maria Marten awaits her lover. A year later her body is found in a grain sack under the floor of the barn, barely identifiable, and so the manhunt begins.

Maria’s story sent shock waves throughout the country. The ‘Red Barn Murder’ - as it became known - was national news. A gruesome tale that had all the hallmarks of a classic crime drama – a missing body, a country location, a disreputable squire and a village stuck in its age-old traditions – it has inspired writers and filmmakers down the ages.

But, in all the hysteria, Maria’s own story got lost. Until now. Hal Chambers and Beth Flintoff’s spine-tingling retelling reclaims Maria Marten’s story and brings it back to vivid, urgent life.

The Birds & The Bees

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich in co-production with John Stalker Productions, Norwich Theatre and Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds present

The Birds and The Bees

On Sarah’s East Anglian farm the honeybees are dropping like flies – just like her love life. Her husband bolted twenty years ago and she hasn’t slept with anyone since. Her middle-aged daughter Gail’s marriage is going up in smoke just like her turkey farm and neighbour Earl is fighting a losing battle with his sugar beet yield and his ‘no strings’ relationships.

Then along comes city-dwelling bio-student Ben to study those pesky poorly performing pollinators. He could probably also have a look at Sarah’s turkeys, which can’t seem to mate without a human helping hand. Perhaps some local mead and the annual Turkey Day’s Dance will sort everything out – and not just for the birds.

As the consequences of that momentous night unfold Sarah, Gail, Earl and Ben discover the best way out of a crisis is to commit to those closest to you – just watch out and don’t get stung.

The Birds and The Bees is a hilarious comedy romp with a heart as big as the laughs it brings. Indeed, it’s the bees’ knees!

Burke & Hare

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

BURKE AND HARE

A new version by Tom Wentworth.
Directed by Abigail Pickard Price.
Originally created by Jenny Wren Productions.
This production of 'Burke & Hare' was premiered at the Watermill Theatre, Newbury.

The 1830s - and in Edinburgh’s back streets and alleys, there’s an absolute killing to be made. Scientific research Hares on at great speed; the surgeons are crying out for fresh bodies to dissect and you’d need to be a right Burke not to spot a gap in the market!

But it’s only a small step from robbing graves to helping people into them…

Three versatile actors, supplied with an array of hats, a variety of disguises and an extraordinary collection of accents play the entire cast of this notorious story – living and (soon to be) dead. Music, murder and mayhem combine in Tom Wentworth’s fast-paced take on the notorious grave-robbing duo. Playing fast and loose with the facts, he creates an evening’s entertainment that’s more hysterical than historical.

‘A gleeful mash up of history and penny dreadful scandal, fast funny and ever so slightly sick’
The Times

‘Pitch black and wickedly funny’
The Stage

‘Gleefully macabre’
Broadway World
