Little Miss Sunshine

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

The road to happiness is a bumpy ride.

Based on the Oscar-winning film, Little Miss Sunshine is a new musical comedy from Tony Award winners James Lapine and William Finn.

The Hoover family has more than a few troubles, but young Olive has her heart set on winning the Little Miss Sunshine beauty contest. When an invitation to compete comes out of the blue, the Hoovers must pile in to their rickety yellow camper van. Can it survive the 800-mile trip from New Mexico to California – and more importantly, can they?

This uplifting, modern classic celebrates the quirks of every family, the potholes in every road, and the power of overcoming our differences.

Lapine and Finn’s inventive musical version opens in London in a brand new production directed by Arcola Artistic Director Mehmet Ergen, then takes to the road for a national tour.

‘A delightful slice of relationship hell’ – Christopher Brett Bailey

‘I’m not going to gamble the happiness I have with you for a chance at happiness with someone else – what’s the point?’

Ollie and Laura have been together for three years, and are one pack of reduced M and S olives away from killing each other. Tonight, however, Ollie is planning on proposing. The evening kicks off with a vicious confrontation between the pair, and with an engagement ring hidden in an en route takeaway, Ollie has the task of navigating through their deep-rooted issues, and – crucially - stopping Laura from walking out altogether. Just as they realise this could be their last night together, we jump back to their first encounter – a shambolic one-night stand.

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

Presented by CTC

What’s the buzz? The award-winning CTC bring you Jesus Christ Superstar.

A timeless work that has wowed audiences for over 40 years, this rock opera is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.

Loosely based on the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Superstar follows the last week of Jesus Christ’s life. The story, told entirely through song, explores the personal relationships and struggles between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples, his followers and the Roman Empire.

The iconic 1970s rock score contains well-known numbers, such as Superstar, I Don’t Know How to Love Him and Gethsemane. A true global phenomenon.

The Lady In The Van

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

Presented by Gallery Players

First a book, a play and then a film,The Lady in the Van tells the true story of Alan Bennett's strained friendship with Miss Mary Shepherd, an eccentric homeless woman whom Bennett befriended in 1974 before allowing her ‘temporarily’ to park her Bedford van in the driveway of his Camden home.

For Alan Bennett charity truly began at home but little did he know that she would remain there for fifteen years.
This wonderfully witty play centres on their extraordinary relationship, which for Bennett was a source of intrigue, frustration and compassion.

"One seldom was able to do her a good turn without some thoughts of strangulation”.

As Alan Bennett very candidly admits ,he and Miss Shepherd mutually benefited from her presence; he provided her with a safe haven while she acted as his muse, providing endless humorous material with her rude interactions with the outside world.

The story is funny, poignant and life affirming.

The Lady In The Van is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd. This is an amateur production presented as part of the New Wolsey’s annual Open Season. Find out more by browsing the Creative Learning section of our website.

A few more details ...

Presented by the winner of the British Youth Music Theatre New Music Theatre Award 2019

Book and lyrics by Rachel Bellman
Music by Elizabeth Sybil Charlesworth

Julia Mosley has nothing. No home, no family, no future. She is a prisoner in Victorian London. A ‘fallen woman’.

But when Charles Dickens and Angela Burdett-Coutts set up a house for fallen women in Shepherd's Bush, Julia and a select group of girls have the chance to turn their lives around.

These girls have a year to transform themselves into respectable, skilled women before being shipped abroad as domestic servants and prospective wives. Which girls will succeed, and which will be thrown back to the streets? And whose dream are they living anyway?

This enchanting new musical by Rachel Bellman and Elizabeth Sybil Charlesworth features irresistible harmonies, exquisite singing and vibrant dance.

P.S. This is a true story.

The Laramie Project

New Wolsey Studio, St Georges Street, Ipswich, IP1 3NF

A few more details ...

The New Wolsey Young Company Present
By Moises Kaufman & The Tectonic Theatre Project
Directed & Designed by Rob Salmon

In October 1998 in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming, 21-year-old student Matthew Shepard, was tied to a fence post, severely beaten, robbed, tortured and left, alone, to die. His body was discovered eighteen hours later. He was rushed to the hospital and put on life support. He died five days later. The reason for this brutal crime? Matthew Shepard was gay.

The hate crime attracted vast attention worldwide, bringing sexual discrimination and violence to the forefront of public discourse. The Tectonic Theater Project travelled to Laramie in the aftermath of the murder with the intent of creating a theatrical portrait of a town coming to grips with horrible, hate-fuelled violence.

Hailed as one of the most captivating and encompassing pieces of contemporary theatre, the play shocks, challenges, and moves all who watch it as it reveals the lowest depths of hatred and greatest heights of compassion that lies within all human beings in any seemingly average community.

Join the acclaimed New Wolsey Young Company as take over our studio on St Georges Street to present this astonishing drama.

Agatha Christie turns sleuth in a play by Philip Meeks.

Agatha Christie and Margaret Rutherford should never have been friends. But they were. Their paths crossed when they found themselves at the heart of one of British cinema's most successful franchises. However, the Miss Marple films almost didn't get made.

Murder, Margaret and Me is a story of friendship, identity and the achievement of women in the long-lost world of the silver screen.

From the company who brought you The Picture of Dorian Gray and Our Man in Havana, Tilted Wig Productions are delighted to return to the New Wolsey Theatre with this exciting play which tells the story of two of our greatest and most celebrated national treasures.

A New Musical by Jim Barne & Kit Buchan

It’s Christmas Eve and Dougal has travelled from Ipswich to New York for his father’s wedding. At JFK Airport he’s greeted by Robyn. Tomorrow her sister becomes his stepmother and Robyn’s dreading it. Dougal can’t wait. But then Dougal loves Christmas and Robyn’s the original Grinch

Thrown together for a wild weekend in the city that never sleeps, their adventure becomes a musical whirlwind of confession, frustration and maxing-out credit cards in Macy’s. Will these two endearing misfits provide the ultimate test for the theory that opposites always attract?

This brand new romantic comedy is filled with heart-warming and hilarious songs, from writers Jim Barne and Kit Buchan, winners of the 2018 Stiles and Drewe Mentorship Award, celebrating the very best of emerging British song-writing talent.

Widow Twankey’s in a spin – there’s the Emperor’s robes to be cleaned, stir fry to be cooked and the mysterious magician, Abanazer, to be catered for. Then her eldest son Aladdin falls for Princess Lotus Blossom, the Emperor’s daughter, and she nearly chokes on her chop suey. But when Aladdin and his pet monkey, Cuddles, get their hands on an ancient oil lamp, a rocking green Genie magically appears to make all their dreams come true. Can they outwit the evil Abanazer, dodge the Emperor’s dragons, and prove that a Princess and a peasant can make the perfect pair?

This ancient tale gets a brand new twist, incorporating over twenty classic songs including I’m A Believer, Papa Don’t Preach, ABC, I Will Survive and Highway to Hell, all played live by our multi talented company of actor-musicians. Mix in outrageous jokes and classic slapstick, with some wicked magic, and Aladdin serves up a sizzling hot feast for all the family.

Please note, the one and only late night special is Fri 20 Dec at 9pm
