Cinderella

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

This year, the New Wolsey Theatre goes back to where it all began, Cinderella – the Rock’n’Roll panto!

Sponsored by Ipswich Building Society

It’s time to Shake a Tail Feather and head Downtown to Ipswich Town Hall to meet the Mayor, Baron Hardup! It’s not easy being Mayor, with Prince Charming due in town for a Royal visit and a staff of only two – his beautiful, feisty daughter, Cinderella and the loyal and loveable Buttons. But when his lonely hearts ad is answered by the mysterious Rubella De Zees, who brings along her two dangerous daughters Hernia and Verruca, it seems he’s far more than Three Steps to Heaven. Thankfully, there’s a Fairy Godmother to make sure Cinderella is ready to Rock Around The Clock!

Written by Peter Rowe, the classic rock’n’roll panto, with a hint of soul, is back with another multi-talented cast of actor-musicians. Rock, pop and soul classics include It's Raining Men, In the Midnight Hour, Try a Little Tenderness and more!

We're Gonna Make You Wanna Shout!

Please note, the one and only late night special is Friday 21 December at 9pm.

The Scarlet Pipistrelle

New Wolsey Studio, St Georges Street, Ipswich, IP1 3NF

A few more details ...

Common Ground Theatre Company Present

THE SCARLET PIPISTRELLE
by Pat Whymark & Julian Harries

They seek him here, they seek him there,
Those Frenchies seek him everywhere.
Is he in Heaven, or is he in Hell,
Or a small theatre in Ipswich - who can tell?

1793. Paris is gripped by the Jacobins. The Compte de Creme-Brulée is to be guillotined on the morrow. His only hope, a daring swoop by that dashing master of disguise and echo-location, The Scarlet Pipistrelle, who has already undertaken several rescues of aristocrats. Who knows, perhaps this time, he might actually succeed!

Common Ground will be concocting their trademark heady mix of genre pastiche, musical dexterity and sheer lunacy that East Anglian Christmas audience know and love.

Ian McKellen on Stage

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

A message from Ian McKellen:

I’m celebrating my 80th birthday by touring a new solo show to theatres I know well and a few that I don’t. The show starts with Gandalf and will probably end with an invitation to act with me on stage. In-between there will be anecdotes and acting. I open at my local arts centre in January and end up by August in Orkney.

Live theatre has always been thrilling to me, as an actor and in the audience. Growing up in Lancashire, I was grateful to those companies who toured beyond London and I’ve always enjoyed repaying that debt by touring up and down the country myself, with the RSC, the National Theatre, Prospect Theatre, the Actors’ Company, as well as with commercial productions.

In 1962 I joined the repertory company at the now defunct Arts Theatre in Tower Street playing everything from Henry V to ‘comic Chinese policeman’ in Aladdin. Now I’m returning to Ipswich to make my debut at the New Wolsey. See you there, I hope!

Ian’s motivation for doing this tour is to give something back to theatres around the country that have played an important part in his career. The profits generated from these performances will go directly towards our Education and Community Programmes, enabling us to continue to carry out work in our local communities with children, young people, teachers and life-long learners. We hope you can support us in raising these vital funds and join us for what is going to be a very exciting evening.

Heart of Darkness

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

Following the popular and critically acclaimed adaptation of Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms, imitating the dog turn their attention to Joseph Conrad’s extraordinarily influential novel, Heart of Darkness.

Written more than 100 years ago, amid the optimism at the turn of a new century, it’s a tale of lies and brutal greed and of the dark heart which beats within us all. Now re-sited in a timeless Europe, in a forsaken landscape lost to the destructive lust for power, it emerges as a tale absolutely for our time.

This bold re-telling of Conrad’s classic is a visually rich, multi-layered work which fuses live performance with digital technology.

Their story is Conrad’s story, of the voyage into the perilous unknown. And, as we continue the journey, it becomes our story, exposing the dehumanisation that paved the way for the horrors of the 20th Century, and countless horrors yet to come.

The heart of darkness must be found. The story is impossible to tell, but it must be told.
