Just Between Ourselves

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

By Alan Ayckbourn, directed by Michael Cabot.

Five birthdays. Two unhappy marriages. One possessive mother.

It is 1976. Dennis tinkers in his garage, cheerfully indifferent to wife Vera’s impending breakdown. Marjorie hovers in the background, making tea and finding fault. Neil has planned a birthday surprise for his wife, but Pam doesn’t share his enthusiasm, preoccupied by frustrations of her own.

In perhaps his most emotionally charged play, Alan Ayckbourn masterfully evokes a world of hidden tensions and suppressed hostility. He skilfully navigates the tightrope between comedy and tragedy, guiding us towards a hilarious, yet chilling finale.

Boy on the Roof - March 2025

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

Vamos Theatre, in a co-commission with London International Mime Festival and a co-production with New Wolsey Theatre, presents 'Boy on the Roof' Acceptance, understanding and love find their way to centre stage. Nominated as a Top 50 show in the UK by the stage, this is a show that you will not want to miss.

Created through Community Conversations across the UK, gathering people’s experiences of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity (ADHD), loneliness, aging, hearing loss, connection and community, Vamos Theatre’s 'Boy on the Roof' is the story of an unlikely friendship, where acceptance, understanding and love find their way to centre stage.

At No.73 Cooper St, Brian Baxter wishes his son wasn’t so irritating. Liam Baxter can’t switch off, can’t sit still, he’s disruptive at school and chaotic at home. As for Liam, he just wishes someone understood him. Three doors down, Albert keeps himself to himself, sticks to his routines. At 91, he knows what he likes and likes what he knows. But Albert misses his wife and just wishes that someone, somewhere would have time for him. When Liam and Albert’s paths cross, no one can fathom what on earth they have in common. But the boy and the man share more than they know, and what slowly grows is a friendship that both of them need, even if the rest of the world can’t see it.

As with all its productions, Vamos Theatre welcomes everyone to see 'Boy on the Roof,' including people who may need a more accepting auditorium environment. The company invites all its audiences to join in supporting this inclusivity, so that everyone feels welcome.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “A poignant exploration of loneliness, connection and friendship.”
Oliver Jones, The Stage

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “If you’ve never seen full mask theatre, there could be no better introduction than Vamos Theatre – the irresistible mix of humour and heartbreak makes them a must-see.”
The Hereford Times

It’s A Fine Life

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

It’s A Fine Life! tells one of show business’ most fascinating stories, the life of Lionel Bart, with songs from his hit musicals (Oliver, Maggie May, Fings Ain’t What They Used T’be) and his chart toppers (Living Doll, From Russia with Love, Little White
Bull).

Lionel Bart is one of the household names of 1960s Britain…but why? Plenty of other songwriters have come and gone with only their melodies remaining in peoples minds. Bart was different, his parties were as spoken about as his chart toppers, his failures as spoken about as his hits and his scandals as publicly entertaining as his musicals. His story is the story of anyone who has taken on the establishment and against all odds made great art. This is the rise and fall story of one of Britain’s greatest musical giants.

WOLSEY WRITERS

Meet. Write. Share.

Wolsey Writers is a creative writing group based at New Wolsey Theatre since 2015.

Our community includes novelists, scriptwriters, poets, storytellers, children’s literature, comedy, and nonfiction. We welcome writing in any genre. We welcome writers from diverse backgrounds. We welcome all levels of experience and aspirations of every size – from haiku to blockbuster trilogy.

Led by Katie Ward, an award-winning author from Suffolk, every session includes tips to improve your creative practice, focused writing time, peer support and inspiration.

‘I come away from Wolsey Writers wanting to go home and write. That’s how I feel.’
