I Wish I Was a Mountain

New Wolsey Studio, St Georges Street, Ipswich, IP1 3NF

Based on “Faldum”
A Fairy Tale by Hermann Hesse

"...a wonderful gift for language, a deep sensibility and a penetrating sense of perspective."

Mansions stand where mud huts once squatted, and beggars ride around in horse drawn carriages. And one man wishes to be turned into a mountain.

Heart of Darkness

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

Following the popular and critically acclaimed adaptation of Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms, imitating the dog turn their attention to Joseph Conrad’s extraordinarily influential novel, Heart of Darkness.

Written more than 100 years ago, amid the optimism at the turn of a new century, it’s a tale of lies and brutal greed and of the dark heart which beats within us all. Now re-sited in a timeless Europe, in a forsaken landscape lost to the destructive lust for power, it emerges as a tale absolutely for our time.

This bold re-telling of Conrad’s classic is a visually rich, multi-layered work which fuses live performance with digital technology.

Their story is Conrad’s story, of the voyage into the perilous unknown. And, as we continue the journey, it becomes our story, exposing the dehumanisation that paved the way for the horrors of the 20th Century, and countless horrors yet to come.

The heart of darkness must be found. The story is impossible to tell, but it must be told.

The road to happiness is a bumpy ride.

Based on the Oscar-winning film, Little Miss Sunshine is a new musical comedy from Tony Award winners James Lapine and William Finn.

When an invitation to compete comes out of the blue, the Hoovers must pile in to their rickety yellow camper van. Can it survive the 800-mile trip from New Mexico to California – and more importantly, can they?

This uplifting, modern classic celebrates the quirks of every family, the potholes in every road, and the power of overcoming our differences.

Lapine and Finn’s inventive musical version opens in London in a brand new production directed by Arcola Artistic Director Mehmet Ergen, then takes to the road for a national tour.

IJF - Stars at St Peter's

St Peters By The Waterfront, College Street, Ipswich, IP1 1XF

A few more details ...

3pm-4pm. Doors Open 2.30pm.
St Peters by the Waterfront Arts Centre, College Street, Ipswich

Stars at St Peter’s
£15 in advance, £16 on the door. Concessionary tickets available.

A return of our acclaimed Stars at St Peter’s club style show. This year we feature top singer Polly Gibbons, sax supremo Alan Barnes, violin king Ben Holder with the great Chris Ingham Trio with Chris Ingham on piano, Arnie Somogyi on bass and George Double on drums. Plus the popular opening set by tomorrow’s jazz musicians, the West Suffolk Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Stars at St Peter’s is a unique and special long night of jazz, featuring top players all performing together as well as in duets and trios. If you like jazz it is a night not to be missed with a unique line up of players you never see in this combination.

Polly Gibbons is a growing presence in the UK Jazz scene. She has already been nominated twice as "Best Jazz Vocalist" by JAZZ FM and the BBC. Fully embracing the inspiring expansiveness of American Jazz, Blues, Soul and R&B, her career as a vocalist, composer and live performer is influenced by these genres. But Polly is hesitant to define her music as strictly Jazz; her wide repertoire and the ease and style with which she performs it, have led her to appear at a variety of music festivals and venues: from the prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London opening for George Benson and Gladys Knight, or for Bozz Scaggs at the famous Montreal Jazz Festival. Her music and her voice have a broad appeal to music lovers - and her ongoing touring over the last few years in the USA has gained her many new fans. Polly's third album on Los Angeles based label, Resonance records 'All I Can Do' released in February 2019. Click here to listen to Polly Gibbons.

Alan Barnes is a prolific international performer, composer, arranger, bandleader and touring soloist. He is best known for his work on clarinet, alto and baritone sax, where he combines a formidable virtuosity with a musical expression and collaborative spirit that have few peers. His range and brilliance have made him a “first call” for studio and live work since his precocious arrival on the scene more than thirty-five years ago. His recorded catalogue is immense and he has made over thirty albums as leader and co-leader alone. Click here to listen to Alan Barnes.

Ben Holder is one of the most gifted and exciting young jazz violinists in the UK. Taught classically from the age of six, he studied at the Birmingham Conservatoire. During his classical studies, Ben began listening to Jazz - classic masters such as Benny Goodman and Oscar Peterson and of course the great jazz violinists including Grappelli, Joe Venuti and the awe inspiring Stuff Smith. Ben's innate sense of swing rhythm, (something which often eludes classical players), stems from those early listening sessions - and his various awards bear testimony to his abilities. A first call jazz violinist for many of the UK's top bands and studios.

Neil Yates is a renowned trumpet player, composer, arranger and educator. Now resident in North Wales, he spent the formative years of his career in London, as a jazz trumpeter with the BBC Big Band and John Dankworth Orchestra amongst others, and working on the London session scene where he recorded with top pop artists including Supergrass, Robbie Williams and Alison Moyet.
He has lectured in music at Leeds College of Music, Birmingham Conservatoire, Royal Northern College of Music and The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and his commissioned composition include an hour-long suite for brass called "Sketches of a Northern Town" and "Undivided"** - a suite for jazz orchestra and ceilidh band which premiered at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall as part of Celtic Connections 2015.
He is the winner of Arts Council Wales' Creative Wales Award 2012 and is Artistic Director of Llandudno Jazz Festival

The Chris Ingham Trio are one of the UK's leading rhythm sections. Described by Art Themen as "like being driven around in a Rolls Royce", the group which consists of pianist Chris Ingham, bassist Arnie Somogyi and drummer George Double are regulars at Ronnie Scott's club and have received high praise in both the national and specialist jazz press.

J.M Barrie’s timeless tale of the boy who refused to grow up is reborn as a spectacular musical by Stiles & Drewe and a book by the late Willis Hall, as Peter Pan whisks the Darling family beyond the stars to his island where there are “no tedious distances between one adventure and the next”.

“…the musical score by Stiles and Drew suggested to me traces of Sondheim, Bart and, Lloyd Webber..." - The Stage

"The contemporary score is timeless and tuneful..." - The Independent

The Lady In The Van

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

Presented by Gallery Players

First a book, a play and then a film,The Lady in the Van tells the true story of Alan Bennett's strained friendship with Miss Mary Shepherd, an eccentric homeless woman whom Bennett befriended in 1974 before allowing her ‘temporarily’ to park her Bedford van in the driveway of his Camden home.

For Alan Bennett charity truly began at home but little did he know that she would remain there for fifteen years.
This wonderfully witty play centres on their extraordinary relationship, which for Bennett was a source of intrigue, frustration and compassion.

"One seldom was able to do her a good turn without some thoughts of strangulation”.

As Alan Bennett very candidly admits ,he and Miss Shepherd mutually benefited from her presence; he provided her with a safe haven while she acted as his muse, providing endless humorous material with her rude interactions with the outside world.

The story is funny, poignant and life affirming.

The Lady In The Van is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd. This is an amateur production presented as part of the New Wolsey’s annual Open Season. Find out more by browsing the Creative Learning section of our website.

Presented by the winner of the British Youth Music Theatre New Music Theatre Award 2019

Book and lyrics by Rachel Bellman
Music by Elizabeth Sybil Charlesworth

Julia Mosley has nothing. No home, no family, no future. She is a prisoner in Victorian London. A ‘fallen woman’.

But when Charles Dickens and Angela Burdett-Coutts set up a house for fallen women in Shepherd's Bush, Julia and a select group of girls have the chance to turn their lives around.

These girls have a year to transform themselves into respectable, skilled women before being shipped abroad as domestic servants and prospective wives. Which girls will succeed, and which will be thrown back to the streets? And whose dream are they living anyway?

This enchanting new musical by Rachel Bellman and Elizabeth Sybil Charlesworth features irresistible harmonies, exquisite singing and vibrant dance.

P.S. This is a true story.

New Wolsey Studio, St Georges Street, Ipswich, IP1 3NF

A few more details ...

The New Wolsey Young Company Present
By Moises Kaufman & The Tectonic Theatre Project
Directed & Designed by Rob Salmon

In October 1998 in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming, 21-year-old student Matthew Shepard, was tied to a fence post, severely beaten, robbed, tortured and left, alone, to die. His body was discovered eighteen hours later. He was rushed to the hospital and put on life support. He died five days later. The reason for this brutal crime? Matthew Shepard was gay.

The hate crime attracted vast attention worldwide, bringing sexual discrimination and violence to the forefront of public discourse. The Tectonic Theater Project travelled to Laramie in the aftermath of the murder with the intent of creating a theatrical portrait of a town coming to grips with horrible, hate-fuelled violence.

Hailed as one of the most captivating and encompassing pieces of contemporary theatre, the play shocks, challenges, and moves all who watch it as it reveals the lowest depths of hatred and greatest heights of compassion that lies within all human beings in any seemingly average community.

Join the acclaimed New Wolsey Young Company as take over our studio on St Georges Street to present this astonishing drama.

Murder Margaret And Me

Tilted Wig Productions presents

Agatha Christie turns sleuth in a play by Philip Meeks.

Agatha Christie and Margaret Rutherford, two of our greatest and most celebrated national treasures, should never have been friends. But they were. Their paths crossed when they found themselves at the heart of one of British cinema's most successful franchises. However, the Miss Marple films almost didn't get made.

Agatha didn't want Margaret to bring her precious spinster to life and Margaret was mortified at the thought of upsetting her fans with something as sordid as murder. But this wasn't her only reason for resisting the part. Margaret had a tragedy buried deeply in her past. One that she'd lived with for a lifetime.

Murder, Margaret and Me is a story of friendship identity and the achievement of women in the long-lost world of the silver screen. As Agatha and Margaret play tug of war with Miss Marple, the Queen of Crime (being a woman who wasn't without a secret or two herself) finally unearths the shocking truth buried in Margaret's past.

Directed by Damian Cruden

This ancient tale gets a brand new twist, incorporating over twenty classic songs including I’m A Believer, Papa Don’t Preach, ABC, I Will Survive and Highway to Hell, all played live by our multi talented company of actor-musicians. Mix in outrageous jokes and classic slapstick, with some wicked magic, and Aladdin serves up a sizzling hot feast for all the family.

Please note, the one and only late night special is Fri 20 Dec at 9pm

Can they outwit the evil Abanazer, dodge the Emperor’s dragons, and prove that a Princess and a peasant can make the perfect pair?

This ancient tale gets a brand new twist, incorporating over twenty classic songs including I’m A Believer, Papa Don’t Preach, ABC, I Will Survive and Highway to Hell, all played live by our multi talented company of actor-musicians. Mix in outrageous jokes and classic slapstick, with some wicked magic, and Aladdin serves up a sizzling hot feast for all the family.
