A few more details ...

“You can make anything by writing.”

Have you got a story to tell? A touch of the poet? Are plays your scene? Or do you struggle to find your voice?

Wolsey Writers is a creative writing group which meets backstage at New Wolsey Theatre. It offers space to let your imagination work, tips on how to improve and encouragement to help you achieve your goals. Whether you’re new to creative writing – or looking to stretch yourself – this workshop will support and inspire you.

Autumn 2017 – DIVE IN

This term we’re running a series of ten workshops, 14 October – 16 December, designed to unlock your imagination. The focus will be on originality, experimentation and, most important of all, enjoying the creative process.

This flexible programme of work could be useful if you’re unsure how to begin project, or stuck in a rut and looking for a new angle. Let’s see what happens when you take a breath and dive in.

14 Oct – Brevity
Could you write a story in 50 words or less? What do you do when your wordcount runs too long? Get ready to be ruthless.

21 Oct – Spoiler Alert
From “I am your father” to “They all did it” … What makes a great plot-twist? And how do you write one?

28 Oct – It’s Alive! (Halloween)
Creatures that come back from the dead. Objects with a life of their own. If it can think for itself, does it have a soul?

4 Nov – Inkblot Test
No context. No clues. No wrong answers. Inspired by the Rorschach test, this is a chance to write what you see.

11 Nov – Children and Animals (Armistice Day)
Fiction can go where the historical record cannot. But how can we tell hidden stories of war, and still be accurate?

18 Nov – What’s in a Name?
Does it matter what you call your characters? What do their names reveal about them? How can you find one that fits?

25 Nov – Eyewitness
Reports rich in detail – or an unreliable point of view? We explore first-hand accounts, credible witnesses, and memory.

2 Dec – Work in Progress
If you’ve got a WiP and would like some support, please email a 1000-word extract for group feedback by Fri 24 Nov.

9 Dec – The End is Nigh
If Armageddon was coming, what decisions would you make? A workshop inspired by “choose your own adventure” books.

16 Dec – Secret Santa
Your chance to inspire someone else! Please bring a present for another writer, such as a picture, poem, article or extract.

Facilitated by award-winning author, Katie Ward. Her novel ‘Girl Reading’ was critically acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic. Tweet @katiewardwriter, #WolseyWriters, and facebook/katiewardwriter. New members are welcome throughout term.

Wolsey Writers - Autumn 17

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

Saturdays, 10am – 12 noon. Meet at the Ticket Desk. £14.50 per workshop.

Dive In: £125 for ten workshops, 14 October – 16 December
Tea & coffee provided.
Tickets 01473 295900 or www.wolseytheatre.co.uk

“It was brilliant – I can't remember a better writing class.”

“Humble, informative and inspirational – that is surely the success and key to Wolsey Writers.”

“Coming at a time when I'm trying to write my first novel, these sessions have been invaluable.”

A Square World

New Wolsey Studio, St Georges Street, Ipswich, IP1 3NF

A few more details ...

Presented by Daryl Beeton

A Square World is a story of friends who enjoy the same routine day after day, each day is the same until an unexpected change is forced upon just one of them. This accidental happening throws everyone into disarray, the friends are suddenly divided into those who can and the one who can’t.

The friends realise their daily routine is no longer as enjoyable as it was and together decide they need to redefine the rules of the square world in which they live. By injecting a little fun and chaos they soon discover their lives won’t be square ever again! This endearing and funny performance looks at the unfairness of being left out in a world designed for everyone else but yourself.

From the mind of Daryl Beeton comes A Square World, an honest, touching and bizarrely quirky piece of theatre for young audiences. This nonverbal story, set to an original commissioned soundtrack uses clean-cut simple design, object manipulation and elements of surprise to create an ever evolving and imaginative world. A place where we discover anything can happen once we think differently and rip up the rule book.

A show for ages 3-6 years, and equally accessible to hearing and deaf audiences.

The performance will be followed by a 10 minute playful session during which the audience will be encouraged to make their own shapes.

Teddy

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

Presented by Sarah Loader for Snapdragon Productions in association with The Watermill Theatre

Elephant and Castle, London. 1956. Saturday night.

Teddy and Josie are about to hit the streets of London for a good time. Hair quiffed. Red lipstick. Dressed toe to head in the latest threads. So what if it’s pouring down, they’re totally skint, and someone wants them dead? A little trouble never stopped a Ted from having a good time. Desperate times call for rock ‘n’ roll.

From the writer-director team behind Boudica at the Globe and Frankenstein at The Watermill Theatre and Wilton’s Music Hall in London comes Teddy, an award-winning, punchy new musical that races through the dark and damaged world of post-war London: a brand new Britain bombed to bits by the Blitz, belts tight with austerity, but ripe and ready for revolution.

With electrifying original songs plus some of the hugest hits from the 1950s performed by the on-stage live band Johnny Valentine and the Broken Hearts, Teddy is the ultimate story of teenage rebellion and the birth of a new musical era, told in the immersive setting of a rock ‘n’ roll club. Bursting with the energy of a live gig, this is theatre that leaves you on a high and jiving all the way home.

Lots of people get them; bad dreams, swirly tummy, feeling prickly. And sometimes they make you feel alone. So, what can a young child with a bad case of the dragons do?

A delightful tale of one child’s journey to come to terms with their dragons told in Taking Flight’s unique style. With live, original music, this highly visual, sensitive production is a humorous and touching exploration of the dragons we all face.

An intergenerational show, featuring creative captioning, interwoven BSL and audio description, You’ve Got Dragons is a treat for the whole family. And remember… “No dragon is more powerful than YOU!”

Woyzeck

A few more details ...

A New Wolsey Young Company Production

By Georg Büchner
Adapted by Daniel Kramer
Directed by Rob Salmon

Woyzeck is the heartbreaking story of a young soldier’s descent into madness.

Inspired by real events, Büchner’s unfinished masterpiece remains one of western drama’s most profound and moving explorations of class and morality. Written shortly before his death at the age of twenty three, Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck is often described as the first ‘modern’ play.

Woyzeck tells the story of a poor soldier manipulated and abused by his superiors, turned into a specimen for cruel experiementation at the hands of the medical establishment, and finally betrayed by the woman he loves, with devastating consequences.

Our Country's Good

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

A Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company Production in co-production with Ramps on the Moon

By Timberlake Wertenbaker
Based on The Playmaker by Thomas Keneally

Our Country’s Good is both a comedy and a powerful drama which shows us how we can escape the chains that bind us.

In 1787, ships each with over 700 convicts on board set sail on an eight month voyage. When they arrive in Australia, their survival is by no means certain: supplies are running out, the convicts are stealing food or trying to escape and the guards are threatening mutiny.

Our Country’s Good tells the extraordinary true story of a group of convicts and a young officer who rehearse and perform a play – Australia’s first theatrical production. With opposition from the officers and a leading lady who may be hanged, the odds are stacked against them.

Our Country’s Good is a touring production made in co‑production with Ramps on the Moon, whose previous collaborations over the last two years include the comedy hit The Government Inspector and a critically acclaimed version of The Who’s Tommy. The production features the creative use of audio description, captioning and British Sign Language interpretation. For more information visit rampsonthemoon.co.uk

By Diane Samuels
Directed by Anne Simon

A deeply moving and timely modern classic about a woman’s struggle to come to terms with her past.

Hamburg 1938: nine year-old Eva is forced onto a train by her desperate mother in order to escape the threat of World War II. Arriving at Liverpool Street Station, tagged like a piece of luggage, she’s handed over to strangers.

Manchester 1980: Evelyn, a proud mum, prepares to say goodbye to daughter Faith as she leaves the family home. But what Faith finds in the attic will change her life forever…

This heart-warming production is from the producers of last year’s acclaimed revival of ‘The Crucible’. It marks the 80th anniversary of the Kindertransport, which saw thousands of Jewish children ferried from Austria and Germany to safety.

Diane Samuels wrote this extraordinary and haunting play 25 years ago. It has never been more relevant than today.

The 6th of May 2018 will mark 40 years since Ipswich Town’s Historic FA Cup victory - a moment when Ipswich united to celebrate success as the underdog became victorious. Join us to celebrate with a milestone musical production!

With a hasty wedding, a first birth and missing tickets to contend with, will our mad-keen Ipswich fans make it to the Final? Can the Town navigate the frozen pitch at Bristol Rovers, the rioting Millwall supporters at the Den, dodgy refereeing at Villa Park and make it all the way to Wembley? Created from the heart-warming memories of super blues fans themselves, with a live soundtrack of chart hits from '78, join Bobby and his Blue Army on this nostalgic trip down Wembley Way.

This production has been created thanks to support from: East Anglian Daily Times and Ipswich Star, who inspired the title Our Blue Heaven from their newspaper front cover on Monday 8 May 1978; BBC Radio Suffolk; Ipswich Town Supporter’s Club; Ipswich Town Football Club; DanceEast, and to the kind donations gathered from our Indiegogo campaign in Autumn 2017.
