Once

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

A Broadway and West End hit musical that's a ravishing love story with a bittersweet difference, Once casts a spell over the audience just as its two lead characters cast a spell over each other.

Based on a cult 2006 Irish indie feature, originally shot on a micro-budget of just $160,000, it tells the uplifting yet yearning story of a part-time Dublin guitarist busker (who works by day in his dad's Hoover repair shop) who falls unexpectedly in love with a young Czech immigrant fellow musician. As we follow their relationship across five short days, big changes happen to both of them in little ways.

As conjured by a score of original Irish-inflected songs, written by the original stars of the film Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, the atmosphere is partly a busked concert and partly an aching romance that feels both spontaneous and freshly minted. The music, played live by the actors themselves, is alternately beautiful and rousing, and Enda Walsh's script quietly overwhelms with its sense of spirit, sincerity and solitude.

There's no other show quite like it. It's the most unusual, unique and affecting musical you're ever likely to see. It has a spontaneous free-form improvisatory vitality, yet it is also emotionally precise in the understated air of longing that anyone who has ever been in love will recognise instantly.

And audiences will fall head over heels in love with the show, too. Once is a genuine one-off which you'll need to see at least once -- but it's also unlikely to be your last time, as you'll want to see it again (and again).

A few more details ...

Directed by Michael Cabot
Set Design by Simon Scullion
Lighting Design by Andy Grange
Costume Design by Kate Lyons

Three married couples. Three kitchens. Three Christmas parties.

Sidney Hopcroft, a small-time tradesman, persuades wife Jane to throw a party hoping to find favour with a bank manager and local architect. As celebrations begin, class differences and naked ambition combine to hilarious effect as, one by one, the characters seek refuge in Jane’s kitchen.

Over the next two years, the Jacksons and Brewster-Wrights take turns to host festivities. But Sidney’s star has begun to rise and roles are increasingly reversed as the cracks in the other couples’ marriages begin to show.

Alan Ayckbourn’s comic masterpiece of social climbing in 1970s suburbia fuses a potent mix of farce and black comedy.

A Little Space

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

A Gecko and Mind the Gap co-production

What does it mean to you to have a little space?
A little space where we can escape the world and be ourselves. Where we can say whatever we want, do whatever we feel and where no-one will ever bother us.

But it can be an unpredictable space too, where voices are funnelled away, fears leak through the floorboards, songs light up the room and you never know who’s listening behind the door.
A place where whispers come to life and one kind gesture could change everything.

Set in an apartment block, this devised show follows the lives of five people and explores what happens when they connect and disconnect from each other, whether through choice or through isolation. Drawing on the performers’ own experiences, a little space is a powerful piece of physical theatre, which uses movement, imagery, sound and lighting to portray the needs, desires and fears of the characters.

Mind the Gap has an internationally respected methodology and approach to its work and is considered a beacon for learning disability arts and artists; a little space is their first physical theatre production. Gecko’s style is both physically demanding and emotionally honest, using breath as an anchor to explore movement and emotion. The company strives to make their work open to interpretation and put their audience at the heart of the narrative – an ethos that has been reflected in the devising of a little space as we ask you, the audience, how it feels to be alone.

A little space has been commissioned by HOME, Manchester and The Place, London.

Following on from the international success of The Dreamer (2016), Gecko’s second Associate Show, A Little Space combines their unique blend of theatre, choreography and stunning imagery with incredible performers from Mind the Gap, one of Europe’s leading learning disability theatre companies.

Mind the Gap’s Charli Ward and Karen Bartholomew team up with Gecko Devising Performer Dan Watson, Associate Directors Rich Rusk and Helen Baggett, Designer Rhys Jarman, Lighting Designer Chris Swain and Composer Dave Price, who, between them have worked on all of Gecko’s hit shows since 2001, to create this intricately crafted performance.

About Gecko
Founded in 2001; Gecko is an award-winning and internationally-acclaimed physical theatre company, led by Artistic Director Amit Lahav. A Gecko show is visual, visceral, ambitious theatre crafted to inspire, move and entertain.
With an expanding ensemble of international performers and makers, Gecko works across diverse age groups, nationalities and forms, and creates work through collaboration, experimentation and play. The company tours nationally and internationally and continues to develop strong partnerships around the world. Beyond the stage, Gecko aspires to open the doors on their process through an extensive education programme and digital presence.

About Mind the Gap
Founded in 1988, Mind the Gap is one of Europe’s largest learning disability theatre companies that creates work for UK and international audiences.
Working in partnership with learning disabled artists, the company delivers a bold, cutting edge, world class artistic programme that impacts locally, nationally and internationally. Work that excites, surprises and challenges audiences in both traditional arts and theatre venues and in different spaces and places.
Its work ranges from award-winning touring theatre productions (CONTAINED, 2015-17; Mia, 2016 – 2018) to large scale outdoor spectacles (ZARA, 2019) and interactive workshops that aim to make change.

About the collaboration
Gecko and Mind the Gap’s paths first crossed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017. Mind the Gap had a desire to create a new piece of physical theatre and were impressed by Gecko’s style and commitment to artistic quality. In November 2017 the companies came together to explore the scope for collaboration, through a weeklong intensive residency, with Mind the Gap’s Artists. The incredible work created during this short time frame proved the viability of the partnership and left both companies excited about a future collaboration.

Fast forward to October 2018, Gecko spent three weeks working with a range of students and Artists at Mind the Gap, with the aim of casting for a new piece of work, based around the idea of light and space. Five performers stood out and brought their individual talents and aesthetics to what eventually became 'a little space.'

Macbeth

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

By William Shakespeare

A Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch and Derby Theatre production

Shakespeare’s darkest and spookiest thriller

Battles. Murder. Ghosts. And desire…

Three witches on a heath have a disturbing prophecy for a victorious warrior. Macbeth will be king of Scotland. As this wicked seed is planted, daring Macbeth and his determined wife Lady Macbeth draw bloody draggers and set out on a fateful path.
But seizing the crown comes at a terrible price, as guilt grows, enemies draw close and the fight for survival hurtles towards a tragic conclusion…

This epic and intensely terrifying period version of Shakespeare’s most regal and timeless classic warns of the effects of political ambition on those who seek power for its own sake.

Directed by Douglas Rintoul, following his acclaimed productions of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ and UK tour of ‘The Crucible’ – “serious theatre, seriously done” (The Stage) – and after this Summer’s highlight adaptation of ‘As You Like It’: a Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch partnership with the National Theatre.

Oliver Twist

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

A new play by Bryony Lavery
Adapted from the novel by Charles Dickens
Directed by Amy Leach

Born into poverty and misfortune, Oliver Twist escapes the workhouse for a life of adventure where he joins Artful Dodger, Fagin and their mischievous gang of pick pockets. But the enjoyment is short lived as he falls under the influence of the vicious Bill Sykes.

This bold, brutal and beautiful new play of Oliver Twist sends you on a dark adventure through the twisted streets of London. Adapted by award-winning playwright Bryony Lavery, every performance of Oliver Twist will feature the use of integrated creative sign language, audio description and captioning.

Oliver Twist is in association with Ramps On The Moon. Now in its fourth year, this pioneering initiative from seven major UK theatre companies is committed to putting D/deaf and disabled artists and audiences at the centre of their work.

Please note, this thrilling new drama is a play not a musical.

Age Guidance: 12+

The script for Oliver Twist is a new adaptation. This adaptation is being created in keeping with the tone of Dickens’ novel and will aim to stay true to the dark, brutal and sometimes violent nature of the original story. It is not a musical. The play depicts violence and abuse against women and children and people with learning disabilities. Please contact our Box Office team if you have any specific questions.

Comedy Club 4 Kids

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

Since 2005, the Comedy Club 4 Kids has been getting the best stand-ups and sketch acts from the international circuit to do their thing for an audience of children (aged 6+) and their families… but without the rude bits! A decade later, the company has expanded from one London residency to being countrywide, running shows and workshops all over the UK from Peebles to Portsmouth, even producing a book on how to write and perform stand-up. The show is family friendly, but without any patronising idiocy. In fact, it's just like a normal comedy club, but it's on in the day, kids are allowed in, and thus there is a higher than usual chance of the entire audience claiming to be called Bob.

The evening's line up is comedians Tiernan Douieb, Helen Duff and Howard Read.

"A highlight for children in recent years, giving them a taste of some of the biggest names in comedy... with the fun, rowdy feel of a real comedy club" - The Guardian

Age recommendation 6+

Private Peaceful

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

By Michael Morpurgo
Adapted by Simon Reade

The Peaceful brothers, Tommo and Charlie, have a tough rural childhood facing the death of their father, financial hardship and a cruel landlord. Their fierce loyalty to each other pulls them through, until one day they both fall for the same girl. And then the Great War comes.

We join 18 year old Private “Tommo” Peaceful in the trenches as he tells us a story of courage, devotion and sibling rivalry on what may be his last night on earth.

Acknowledged by Michael Morpurgo as his favourite work, this professional premiere is a new ensemble-version by Simon Reade. It tells the story of a country lad fighting a war he doesn’t understand for people he cannot respect.

Private Peaceful was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal, won the Red House Children’s Book Award and won the Blue Peter Book Award.

Burke & Hare

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

The New Wolsey Theatre Presents
A new version by Tom Wentworth
Originally created by Jenny Wren Productions and first produced by The Watermill Theatre
Directed by Abigail Pickard Price

In the backstreets of Edinburgh in 1828 there’s a killing to be made. Scientific research Hares on apace, the surgeons are crying out for fresh bodies to dissect, and you’d need to be a right Burke not to spot a gap in the market. And it’s only a small step from robbing graves, to helping people into them…

Three versatile actors, supplied with an array of hats, a variety of disguises and an extraordinary collection of accents play the entire cast of this notorious story – living and (soon to be) dead. Music, murder and mayhem combine in Tom Wentworth’s breathless take on this infamous double act, playing fast and loose with the facts to create a full blooded evening’s entertainment which is more hysterical than historical.

A gleeful mash up of history and penny dreadful scandal, fast funny and ever so slightly sick
The Times

Pitch black and wickedly funny
The Stage

Gleefully macabre
Broadway World

Age guidance 12+ Parental discretion advised.

A few more details ...

Sponsored by Ipswich Building Society.

Dame Dolly Durden’s family farm has fallen on hard times - Squire Snuffbox is demanding the rent and Giant Blunderbore, with his wicked sidekick, Fleshcreep, is terrorising the land. There’s only one thing for it – Jack will have to sell their last remaining cow, Bessie. But when Jack comes back from the market with nothing more than a bag of beans it looks like the Durdens are done for.
Then up pops Fairy Aubergine, up jumps a gigantic beanstalk and Jack is soon on his way up too, battling giants, rescuing the family farm and romancing the Squire’s spirited daughter, Jill.

Brought to you by the famous New Wolsey company of multi-skilled actor musicians, it’s the best of pantomime mixed with the best songs from the classic rock and pop playlist, all played live before your eyes, including 'Hit The Road Jack,' 'Lady Marmalade,' 'Get Offa My Cloud,' 'Go Your Own Way' and many, many more. This glorious mash up of pantomime and pop concert is a festive treat for all the family. This year it’s GIANT size.

Jack & The Beanstalk

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...
