Eugene Onegin

New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS

A few more details ...

Following their critically-acclaimed and hugely popular five-week run in London last year, Olivier Award-winning OperaUpClose tour the UK with their new English Version of Tchaikovsky’s sweeping Eugene Onegin, arriving at the New Wolsey Theatre on Friday 19 October.

With a narrative that is both romantic and thought-provoking, the central character is the fiercely intelligent but naïve Tatyana, whose entanglement with Onegin results in a wiser, sadder but ultimately self-reliant heroine.

This new chamber version transposes the story of Tatyana’s sexual awakening to the early 1960s, a world on the cusp of the women’s liberation movement when new thinking fought against the old ways. Infatuation and self-restraint do battle in a well-tailored world of sleek suits and full skirts, with seasonal allusions to the snow-swept Russian landscape of the original.

Performed by ten singers and four instrumentalists in a new orchestration for piano, cello, violin and woodwind; this coming-of-age story is a requiem for lost innocence and a triumphant celebration of hard-won independence – told through some of the most glorious music ever written.

The Gondoliers

Seckford Theatre, Burkitt Road, Woodbridge, IP12 4JH

A few more details ...

Presented by Ipswich Gilbert & Sullivan's Society

In Venice lived two brothers, Marco and Giuseppe. They are happy being Gondoliers, until one day an imposing stranger announces they are not in fact brothers, but that one of them is the only son and heir of the late King of Barataria. Precisely which is the King and the Gondolier is unfortunately an inconvenient mystery. It is doubly inconvenient when they discover that the King, whichever he is, was married in infancy to the daughter of a Spanish Duke as - only half an hour earlier - the brothers were both married to two local Venetian girls.

Forced to leave their new wives behind, the Gondoliers set off to Barataria, set up a republican government where all are equal, and they reign in a coalition government. Surely this can't go on forever?

Come and join us for an evening of love, fun and frolics - all in Gilbert and Sullivan's inimitable style!
