But here’s the silver lining folks – it’s panto in the summer!
The five-star smash-hit show of 2020, The Snow Queen, is back by popular demand!
Peter Rowe’s Rock ‘n’ Roll panto features all your favourite actor-musicians and iconic songs like Let’s Get Loud, If I Had a Hammer, I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles), I Can See Clearly Now and Runaway Baby. The show is once again available both in our auditorium and as a livestream directly to your home from Thursday 27 May until Sunday 13 June 2021.
All’s well in the peaceful little town of Ballbroken; Gerda is about to be crowned the Queen of May, the blacksmith’s apprentice Simon Clinkerbin hopes to graduate and get his very own hammer, and Dame Sigrid Smorgasbord has prepared a magnificent May Day feast. What’s more, it looks like something’s blossoming between Sigrid’s young son Kay, and Gerda, the blacksmith’s daughter. But when Primrose, Spirit of the Spring, smashes the Snow Queen’s cursed mirror, little does she know this will only make matters worse…
The show was given five stars from The Stage, who described it as a ‘riotous jukebox jamboree’ and ‘a total triumph.’ The East Anglian Daily Times wrote that ‘a blended panto has been embraced by the venue with characteristic and inventive gusto. And it works!’ and the show even received praise from The New York Times!
You can join in all the fun from the comfort and safety of your own home. Just buy a ticket for the live-streamed show and watch on your PC, Laptop, Tablet, Smart TV or even your phone. When you book your ticket on our website, you’ll be asked to create an account (if you don’t already have one) so you can log in later to watch The Snow Queen. You will then receive a link in your confirmation email, to use on the day of the show – just follow the instructions on the email up to 30 minutes before the show starts and you’ll be taken directly to The Snow Queen show page.

We have to do things a bit differently this year because of Covid-19, so we’re not operating a Box Office in the usual way. We’re asking as many people as possible to book their tickets online. If you will find this impossible, please call us on 01473 295900 between 10:00am and 6:00pm, Monday to Fridays and we will happy to help. Our team is much reduced in number, so we’ll be extremely grateful for your patience as we work hard to provide a great service. If you have to leave a message, we promise to get back to you.
Oh Yes You Can! Well, lockdown rules permitting of course. We have approximately 150 seats available per show (usually we can seat 400 people) so we expect demand to be high. Also, we’ve had to arrange seats in specific groupings to ensure Covid-19 safety. You may not be able to book the seats you expect and you will only be able to book seats together for people from within your household or support bubble. Seats must be booked and paid for in the blocks available. We’re confident that you will appreciate the efforts we’ve made to safely welcome people back to the theatre and you’ll understand that booking seats will be rather different this year!
The show will go on! We have planned The Snow Queen extremely carefully so we can adapt to new circumstances, including making it an entirely online experience. If you book tickets for the auditorium and we find we can’t have people in the theatre, we will contact you to offer you a live-streamed ticket. We’ll also offer to refund the difference between that ticket and the cost of your seats. If you cannot make the show because of illness or having to self-isolate, just contact us and we’ll arrange an alternative or a refund. We want you to book with confidence, knowing that we’ll be flexible and fair in these extraordinary times.
We’ve re-imagined our Rock ‘n’ Roll Panto so that it’s a great experience, whether you’re watching at home or in the auditorium. We’ve spaced out the available seats and the seating plan is the same for every show. We’ve designed the experience around the idea of a TV studio audience – where a show is recorded in front of a small, live audience and then streamed into people’s homes via TVs or other screens. In this case, the streaming into people’s homes will take place at the same time as the action on the stage, so you will all see it together. You will see cameras, and you will see a large screen at the back of the stage, which will be part of the action. We don’t want to give away too much, but be assured that we’ve thought this through very carefully and we know you’ll have a great time, whether you’re watching at home or in the New Wolsey Theatre itself.
You will be included in the action! Tune in early so you can see our fun ‘countdown’ videos by former Dames. We will also be running a Twitter poll during the show so you can influence the outcome of an important decision… And finally, we will need a particular prop during the show in order to finish the story. Keep an eye on our website and social media for how to get involved.
Not only is this an incredibly ambitious production, we’ve raised our game to be even more accessible than ever before.
All shows, both online and livestreamed, of The Snow Queen will have captioning and audio description available. The only performances that will not have captioning are the livestreamed shows on Friday 4th June at 7pm and Saturday 12th June at 2pm, as they will have a British Sign Language interpreted stream instead. If you are in the auditorium for these shows, both the captioning and the BSL are available to you as usual.

We ask people to be understanding that, much like our past pantomimes, tickets fly out the door very quickly. We will have a waiting list in place for each performance, which we will call upon if any tickets become available.
Being on the waiting list does not guarantee that you will receive a call offering you tickets. To ensure that you have a seat in the auditorium you are most welcome to book a block of 3 or more, even if you do not require all of these seats. Prices are fixed per bubble and are not changeable. We appreciate any additional contribution you can make towards the New Wolsey Theatre and promise we will give you an experience to remember!
What a lovely idea! The easiest way to do this is to purchase a New Wolsey gift voucher for £25 and send this to the recipient’s email address. They can then use this voucher to purchase a live-streamed ticket for ‘The Snow Queen.’ If you would like to purchase a ticket for somebody else on your own New Wolsey account, you will have to buy them a ticket too – our system will then recognise that you have two passes to the show on your account. You will then have to give them your login details and send them the confirmation email so they can access the link to the performance.
Emails tend to hide in junk boxes so check them first. If you haven’t received the link 24 hours before the show (or can’t find it), just contact us on 01473 295900 or email firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll send it again.
Yes. This is a live-streamed show. The start time will be on your confirmation email. Evening shows start at 7pm and most matinees start at 2pm but do check your email.
There is an opportunity in the show, if you’re watching from home, to open your door to Dame Sigrid’s messenger live during the performance. It will involve handing over a hammer (either home-made or from the shed) to help Dame Sigrid and Gerda save the day.

Oh yes we are! We’ve got some exciting plans for the summer up our sleeves that we’re yet to announce. Keep a lookout on our emails, social media and on our website for the announcement!
We have rigorous processes in place, including enhanced cleaning, staff training, separated auditorium seating, one-way system, temperature checks and more. We meet the Government standards for venue safety and have a ‘See It Safely’ accreditation. We’ve made a video to explain all that we’re doing – check it out here (British Sign Language interpreted version available here).
Approximately 150 – there is slight variation depending on booking patterns.
The actors are staying together in their own separate bubble. They are following our procedures daily to ensure they are protected. We will be testing actors for Covid-19 before rehearsals start and before production starts. Inside the theatre, the actors’ areas are separate from other staff areas.
Crew are also forming their own bubble and will be tested prior to rehearsal and production processes commence. They will also be following all the daily Covid-19 safety procedures. Other staff will be separated from cast and crew and following the same safety procedures.
We will fully co-operate with the Government guidance on this situation, should it arise. As there are many variations to this scenario we can’t give a blanket answer, but be assured we have our very own Captain Covid and he’s on top of all the latest news and guidance as it comes out. Lucky him!
We had overwhelmingly positive feedback about our Covid safety measures in December and we’re working really hard once again to make sure you can be confident in returning to our venue.
