The Big Afternoon is our annual free micro-festival of arts and culture for the local community.

Each year, our Big Afternoon brings together the local community to experience a free afternoon of arts and culture, because access to arts and culture should never be a privilege – it’s something everyone deserves. We aim to provide an event packed with family-friendly entertainment, live music, and arts activities. We are always incredibly grateful for the support we receive from local community groups, organisations and services who join us on the day to promote all Ipswich has to offer.

Over the last two Big Afternoon’s we have commissioned special pieces by local artists to celebrate Ipswich.

A Perfect Day in Ipswich 2025

A Perfect Day in Ipswich was a very special poem written by local poet and NWT Associate Artist, Amy Wragg, in consultation with the local community, including our own Creative Club. Local Sound Designer and NWT Young Company alumni, James Hattan, created a soundscape from the poem to bring it to life during the event for those attending.

Ipswich Heroes Mural 2024

Our Ipswich Heroes Mural was designed and created by local artist Lilly Hammond. The mural is a celebration of local people who were nominated by residents of the town for the difference they make to others’ lives. At the event, attendees had the chance to get involved in the mural painting! You can see this beautiful piece in the stairwell of our theatre.
