‘Tough Love’ (reading) – Writers’ Week - New Wolsey Theatre

‘Tough Love’ (reading) – Writers’ Week

Performed on Sat 25 Jun

The words 'Tough Love: Rehearsed Reading' sit in a red heart wrapped up in barbed wire.

'Tough Love' brings to life stories of resilience, and the dreams and hope-filled ambitions of women living in refuge.

Set in 2022, the character of the beloved Victorian comic and original pantomime dame Dan Leno hosts an evening of drama and songs as he casts his acerbic eye over the plight of women today. He asks: has anything changed in the hundred years since he trod the boards? And is the plight of women today just the tip of the iceberg of society’s historic disregard?

Playwright and lyricist Danusia Iwaszko.
Musical director and composer Phil Gostelow.
Directed by Roger Haines.

A script-in-hand rehearsed reading of a brand-new play with songs originally commissioned by Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds as part of their Arts Council funded ‘Beyond Walls’ programme.

Age Guidance 14+. The production contains sensitive material of a sexual and violent nature including scenes of rape and language that some may find offensive.

This event is part of Writers’ Week – an inspiring programme of readings and writing events, a true space for everyone interested in all things writing to come together and celebrate the power of words.

All the events are free of charge but we will be holding bucket collections throughout the week to raise money to support the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal. So not only will you be getting involved in some thought-provoking and interesting events, but you’ll be supporting a humanitarian cause at the same time!
