An English Touring Theatre and Rose Theatre Kingston co-production

On one dark and stormy night in the upper day room of the Silver Retirement Home, five elderly ladies are trading stories of their remarkable lives. With the storm floods rising and no rescue team in sight, the ladies are faced with the sudden realisation that in order to survive they are going to have to do what they have done for their entire lives – do it themselves!

Silver Lining is the hilarious new comedy by writer, actor, presenter and political activist Sandi Toksvig. Starring Sheila Reid, Joanna Monro, Amanda Walker, Rachel Davies and Maggie McCarthy. It tells the tale of five extraordinary yet forgotten women, who come together one treacherous night to recreate The Great Escape – senior citizen style!

This World Premiere production of Silver Lining is brought to the stage by English Touring Theatre and the Rose Theatre Kington. ETT’s recent work at the New Wolsey includes Brian Friel’s Translations, Roger Mc Gough’s adaptation of The Misanthrope, and Somerset Maugham’s The Sacred Flame.

Note: Contains strong language.

What the public say

One of the best productions we have seen at the Wolsey, the talented cast and believable dialog combines hilariously funny one liner’s with soul stopping truths about age and dementia, and then back to laughter again. It is a real roller-coaster for the emotions. The cast you will all think "now I know them from somewhere" as they are all well known actors for a certain age of audience!, I would actually believe that this was taken from true life, but I would have to look a long way to find a funnier bunch of inmates, (oops sorry residance), especially Marks and Spenser? Will try to see it again before it goes. Well worth it, and you feel a better person for seeing it.

Went to see this last night and it was WONDERFUL. Not seen such a good piece of theatre for ages. The play was funny, pertinent to most of the audience and clever. The performances were incredibly believable, especially the lad who played the burglar. His body language was terrific. The ladies in the home were perfectly cast and the play was enthralling. It was so fabulous that I actually stood up to applaud, and I NEVER do that. I'd see it again in a heartbeat.

Went to see this last night and it was just WONDERFUL. First time I've ever stood up to applaud at the end. First half is hysterically funny, second half less so but thought provoking instead; but I would gladly see this again. What a wonderful, wonderful play and what wonderful performances.....repetition of words is intentional....used for emphasis. And the lad who played the burglar was terrific. Very funny, not so much with what he said but with his body language. Oh please do go and see this. I defy anyone to not enjoy it.
